EMF Shielding

What is EMF shielding?

EMF shielding reduces or removes harmful human-made electromagnetic radiation from a specific environment like a bedroom, kitchen, living room, or outdoor area. EMF shielding is part of the EMF mitigation process. EMF shielding uses a variety of shielding materials for this purpose.

Radio Frequency (RF) Shielding

Radio Frequency (RF) shielding follows two different methods: RF reflection and RF absorption. Radio frequency reflection works by reflecting most of the RF signal to bounce off of the shielding material (like nickel/copper). This is generally a better method provided the reflecting material is grounded. Radio frequency absorption works because the absorbing material (like carbon) absorbs much of the RF signal that contacts it. This material does not generally need to be grounded. It is important to remember that, although shielding is effective, it may not actually shield 100% of the RF signal. Consider experimenting with multiple layers of shielding material to achieve the desired RF exposure reduction. An inexpensive RF shielding material is aluminum foil or aluminum screen used for window screens.

AC Magnetic Field Shielding

AC Magnetic field shielding requires a different approach than RF's shielding. Magnetic field shielding materials create an area of lower magnetic field in their vicinity by attracting the magnetic field lines to themselves through what is known as permeability. Only ferrous metals like nickel, stainless steel, or iron will work for shielding magnetic fields.

AC Electric Field Shielding

AC Electric field shielding is achieved through metal clad and metal conduit wiring methods.

Dirty Electricity Shielding

Dirty Electricity shielding is typically achieved by installing specialized filters to help reduce the amount of DI. Sometimes this method can cause the AC magnetic fields to increase. It is important to understand that "dirty electricity filters" may not actually filter all of the dirty electricity, also known as harmonics.

Do EMF Protection Products Work?

There are a lot of products on the market that claim to reduce, block, neutralize, or shield EMF's. Products like Orgonite, Shungite, pendants, crystals, salt lamps, and the like. These products often give people a sense of security without confirmation that the product works. The only way to know if an EMF protection product works is to test it, and most people who buy these products don't test them. In some cases, these types of products can actually make a person feel worse by causing an increase in EMF exposure rather than a decrease. Additionally, these products are distracting because they move the focus and conversation away from creating a healthy EMF lifestyle and environment.

EMF Shielding Disclaimer

Disclaimer: EMF Consultation does not guarantee that all shielding efforts will be effective for your unique circumstances. Though shielding may be effective in reducing a percentage of EMF exposure, it may or may not be enough of a reduction to produce effective results. For example, people that live under or near high voltage power lines cannot shield the dangerously high EMF levels from these power lines. Living or working very close to cell towers is another example. Sometimes these RF fields can be effectively shielded, but not always.
