EMF Safety Standards

What are the EMF Safety Standards?

Currently, there are no U.S. Federal safety standards limiting residential or occupational exposure to AC magnetic and AC electric fields from electrical power lines. This includes "dirty electricity" also known as electromagnetic interference which travels on electric wiring and power lines. (1)

The National Electrical Code (NEC) serves as a set of regularly updated standards for the safe installation of electric wiring in the United States.

Currently, there are no U.S. Federal "safety standards" for safe levels of RF radio frequency radiation emitted by cell phones, cell towers, and other wireless devices. The FCC has instead adopted industry safety "guidelines" based on antiquated research while ignoring thousands of peer reviewed non-industry funded scientific studies showing harmful health effects from RF radio frequency radiation. (2)

Guidelines are not a scientific standard. Without proper long-term scientific studies and testing for safety, the public cannot assume following FCC safety guidelines will provide "safety" from RF exposure.

According to Dr. Ronald Melnick, Ph.D., senior toxicologist with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institute of Health - "An important lesson that should be learned from the NTP studies on cell phone radiofrequency radiation is that we cannot assume any current or future wireless technology is safe without adequate testing." (3)

In a historic decision on August 13, 2021 (EHT et al. v. the FCC), the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit judges ordered the FCC to explain why it ignored scientific evidence showing harm from wireless radiation. (4)

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit judges ruled in the historic case EHT et al. v. the FCC that the December 2019 decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to retain its 1996 safety limits for human exposure to wireless radiation was “arbitrary and capricious” and found the FCC violated the Administrative Procedure Act and failed to respond to comments on environmental harm.
